Columbia Triathlon
If you want to participate in one of the nation’s most challenging triathlons, you should try out the Columbia Triathlon.
This event is held in collaboration with Howard County Recreation and Parks and the Columbia Triathlon Association. The race for 2008 will be held on May 18 at 6:45 a.m. at Centennial Lake, Elliot City, Maryland.
The minimum age for competing is 14; however, you will need parental permission if you are less than 18 years old. It is encouraged for you to wear a wetsuit due to the cold water temperatures: 66-77 degrees Fahrenheit. Air temperatures average 55-75 degrees Fahrenheit.
It is good for you to also note that the race will take place regardless if it is rainy or sunny. However, if there is severe weather, the management holds the right to change the race for safety purposes.
If there happens to be a natural disaster or other major disaster due to a local incident or terrorist act, the race will be discontinued and entry fees will not be refunded. Before registering, each athlete commits to these risks.
There are ranging race fees depending on how you are entering the race, if you are a USAT member or not, or if you are active military.
Registration fees range from $90.00 to $110.00 for single person entries, and $175.00 to $205.00 for relay teams. Entry fees increase after certain dates, so make sure to know when peak registration begins.
The 1500 meter swim is held in the fresh water Centennial Lake. The swim course is a counter clockwise rectangular route marked by buoys.
The 41k bike tour takes you through the rolling countryside and farmlands of Howard County. Be prepared for four climbs. It is also important to know that the roads are not closed to traffic.
However, there this a lot of police and staff support to monitor the route. The running leg of the Columbia Triathlon is known as one of the most challenging. It is a 10k run with five Aid Stations.
