All about the Ironman Triathlon

The Ironman triathlon is known to many as the world’s most rigorous endurance challenge. It is a world-famous event that attracts hundreds of athletes yearly.

A triathlon, as you may know, is composed of three endurance events: swimming, cycling and running. Doing all these can be pretty hard, but the Ironman Triathlon takes them to a whole new level.

Here are some of the additional challenges brought on by the Ironman event:

1) Distance – one of the biggest factors of the event is the fact that it’s much, much longer than your average triathlon. The Olympic triathlon event consists of a .93-mile swim, 24.85-mile cycling, and a 6.21-mile run.

However, the Ironman triathlon requires athletes to endure a 2.4 mile swim, 112 miles of cycling and 26.2 miles of running –clearly a far more rigorous task. It is because of the unbelievable distances that some people feel proud just for finishing the triathlon.

2) Conditions – the conditions faced in the Ironman Triathlon are far more challenging than what athletes face in other such challenges. Here are some key differences;

A) Swimming- swimming in the Ironman triathlon is done in rough water. This means athletes have to work harder to fight the current. The waters are also warm enough that buoyant wet suits are not allowed, giving competitors much more hurdles to tackle.

B) Cycling – when athletes come to the cycling leg of the event, they face punishing gusts of wind that are sure to try a person’s balance and leg strength. Although the course and the road itself is quite moderate, the winds are what make the cycling leg of the ironman race more than just another event.

C) Marathon – the marathon run is usually timed so that it takes place in the hottest part of the day. With the sun beating down on their backs and the humidity of the Hawaii air, runners drained of energy struggle towards the finish line.

The Ironman triathlon is more than just about finding the best athlete in terms of endurance; many people join it to look within themselves and find out if they have what it takes to endure the race.
